Topic #2: Project Update
2.1. Project # 1: Las Vegas Special Session - Update by M.Verliac
Project Leader: Michel Verliac
Working Group: Dave Cooper, Kevin Dodds, David Lumley, Ron Masters, Partha Routh
There was no special update for the Nov 5th meeting. The Special Session happened in Las Vegas as scheduled and was well attended. The room was 80% filled most of the time and attendance was never below 50% (at the end of the session). A group discussion took place at the end of the session as we wanted and had duration of more than 30 minutes after the end of the official program. Papers were of excellent quality. Feedback received after the session was good.
SEG and The Leading Edge sent us the following message:
Hello Michel
I’m hoping you can assist with the following:
The Leading Edge and online editorial staff are trying to provide comprehensive coverage of the Annual Meeting for both SEG online and TLE. However, our editorial resources are limited this year, and our stay in Las Vegas will be over before the Technical Program begins. Therefore, we are hoping that the technical program special session leaders would be willing to provide a synopsis or recap of their individual programs. This recap/synopsis would not have to be a lengthy article. I’m just looking for facts and highlights on each session and maybe a quote from each session leader on what was special this year about their respective sessions for inclusion in one article about this year’s technical programs and the historic number of special sessions.
The TLE Annual Meeting recap issue will likely be in the Feb or March issues, so the deadline would be mid-January at the earliest. Please let me know if you can assist!
Thanks in advance, and best regards!

We expect to deliver this document as requested.
2.2. Project #2: 2009 Summer Research WS - Chairman David Lumley
Project Leader: David Lumley
Working Group: Kevin Dodds, Cengiz Esmersoy, Lianje Huang, Ron Masters, Partha Routh, Michel Verliac
David gave an update on the project.
More members need to be added to the steering committee and David is working on that. Location and dates are confirmed in Banff (Alberta) on Aug 23-27, 2009. This will be coordinated with the Hedberg Conference happening in Vancouver the week before. Both events will be three society (AAPG/SEG/SPE) meetings in order to cover the full CO2 spectrum. However the SEG event will focus on Geophysics hardcore. People will have the opportunity to attend both but the SEG aims at a offering a high level of presentations and discussions in Geophysics. For the logistics, Amy Watson is finalizing the contract (expected to be ready by end of November).
The official announcement (Ad) is ongoing and will be published in The Leading Edge and on the SEG website. The time line will start on Sunday and will cover three full days and one field trip.
A drafted list of sessions includes: - Overview and challenges - Rock Physics - Geochemistry - Geophysical modeling - Site Characterization - Data acquisition (one or more like seismic, EM, Geochemistry, etc) - Data processing and imaging - Interpretation and inversion - Case studies (Australia, Europe, North America, etc) - Others ?
The call for paper will run all along Q1.
Colin Sayers mentioned that the link to the SEG Website was not active. Michel Verliac asked for an potential need for sponsors. Amy Watson is working on the budget but sponsors will be probably needed for coffee breaks, Icebreaker and lunches. People will have dinner by themselves. A scholarship for students is being reviewed too. Final numbers were expected to be ready by end of November.
Arthur Cheng mentioned that Partnership meetings are progressing and that DOE data could be available soon. Larry Myer should be contacted.
2.3. Project # 3: CO2 Webpage - Update by Stewart Levin
Project Leader: Stewart Levin
Working Group: Chris Liner
www/SEG.org/CO2 (not working…) http://cage.uh.edu/rql/wiki/index.php/SEG_CO2_SubCommittee_Experimental_Wiki
Stewart told the group that the Sub-Committee webpage was activated but still some problems were encountered. The Wiki page is provided by Chris Liner. One concern is to know if we should answer questions from the public through the webpage. The Wiki will be restricted to the Subcommittee while the webpage is expected to be public, proposing for instance connection to other website.
2.4. Project # 4: Collaboration with Other Societies
Project Leader: None
Working Group: Kevin Dodds and Don White (GHGT), Lianje Huang (AGU), Michel Verliac (EAGE), None for SPE and AAPG.
AAPG: As for the SPE, AAPG will support the Summer Workshop. It could be a way to initiate contacts.
AGU: Nothing new to report
EAGE: The Summer Workshop will be co-supported by the EAGE. Michel Verliac to contact them.
GHGT: The GHGT-9 will happen the week after the SEG. Kevin Dodds will attend.
SPE: This society will have several events focused on or including CO2 topics: in Middle East in February, in San Diego, in Cadiz Spain and in Denver during the year.
Kevin Doods said that we need to stay focused on Geophysics. Michel Verliac added that we need a longer term planning with these societies, maybe 2 or 3 years in advance in order to be able to coordinate joint actions. Arthur Cheng mentioned also that the SEG committee should be associated to this effort.
2.5. Project # 5: SEAM Project - Update by Arthur Chang
Project Leader: Partha Routh
Working Group: David Cooper, Cengiz Esmersoy, Michel Verliac
This topic will be discussed during the Las Vegas meeting.
2.6. Project # 6: CO2 Special Issue on TLE in Feb 2010
Project Leader: Kevin Dodds
Working Group: None
Kevin Dodds accepted to take the lead for this project. One of the questions that came out from the discussion is to know how many papers we will need. We should target 6 to 8 papers plus maybe one on the Summer Research Workshop.
There was a consensus also that we should try to promote the Special Session from Las Vegas by putting an insert in The Leading Edge or possibly in First Break or Geophysics. This session could be also a candidate for a contribution to Practicing Geophysics.
2.7. Project # 7: CO2 Special Issue on Geophysics
Project Leader: Chris Liner
Working Group: None
Nothing new to report at the exception that Chris Liner accepted to lead the project.
2.8. Project # 8: Standards and Best Practices elaboration
Project Leader: None
Working Group: None
Stewart Levin told the group that EPA is working on emitting regulations while API has formed a CCS group. They have experts working on what needs to be done. Should we approach them ? Kevin Dodds said that he will approach them to investigate on their input needs from the industry and to recommend them to talk to industry groups like us.
2.9. Project # 9: Contribution to Practicing Geophysics
Project Leader: Michel Verliac (By default)
Working Group: None. Nothing new to report.
3. Topic #3: Proposal for a Project #10 With 3 sub projects (Discussion groups on Site
Screening and Characterization, Site Modeling and Site Monitoring)
Project Leader: Michel Verliac
Working Group: None
During the discussion Michel Verliac proposed to have the Wiki site as the tool of choice to initiate the discussion and exchange of ideas. Kevin Dodds added that for Site Modeling and Site Monitoring some technologies require Geophysics some not. What are the limits of the measurements? What are the issues to be addressed? Site Monitoring, probably yes, Site Screening, probably no. Maybe we should try to think how to use them. Michael Hoversteen mentioned the problem of cost when dealing with States agencies. Colin Sayers proposed to have three levels of solutions:
- Level 1 is a cheap solution
- Level 2 is a medium solution if you provide enough money
- Level 3 is the State of the Art solution
4. Topic #4: Any items proposed by the subcommittee members
Kevin Doddes proposed to have the SEG writing a document capturing the experience from the industry to a medium level audience including a monitoring chapter.
Regards,
M.Verliac
Notes from Las Vegas dinner
On the Sunday night, following the SEG Icebreaker, several of us kept breaking the ice at the RumJungle restaurant in Las Vegas. This allowed members to meet in person and not only through phone conference calls. Good ideas were exchanged in an informal location. This concerned Co2 projects but also the subcommittee activity (Summer Workshop, Wiki site, meetings, etc). One of the new idea that came out and which was proposed by Chris Liner and was discussed with a good support is to have a SEG reference book to be published on the CO2 Storage Theme. It could be a compilation of existing papers covering the fundamental issues or new publications from ongoing work or projects. There was a good support to have this idea becoming Project #11: A SEG CO2 reference book with Chris taking the lead on the project. Concerning more notes about the dinner, the scribe has to admit that the darkness of the Jungle late in the evening after breaking all that Ice in the Rum makes him very challenging to remember all the details of the meeting, especially writing the minutes more than three month later… My apologizes for this... Anyone who would like to share more about what was discussed and remembers it is welcome to contribute.
Notes from Research Committee Annual Meeting
The subcommittee meeting activity for 2008 was in the agenda of the full Research Committee meeting on Thursday night. Attached are the slides that were presented. The global picture was given by Michel Verliac and each project was quickly presented by the Project Leader if present in the meeting.
