Project Leader: David Lumley
Working Group: Kevin Dodds, Cengiz Esmersoy, Lianje Huang, Ron Masters, Partha Routh, Michel Verliac
Being in Australia, David could not attend. He mentioned by email that the registration was around 70. No specific problem is being reported. The technical program is closed.
Project # 3: CO2 Webpage - Update by Chris Liner
Project Leader: Stewart Levin
Working Group: Chris Liner
No progresses have been made on this project. During the discussion within and after the meeting, it was mentioned that maybe this project, with the Wikipage, should become one of our top projects after we achieve the SMWS and the Special Issue of TLE, end of this year or early next year. It should become the focal point for updating the group. .
Project # 4: Collaboration with Other Societies
Project Leader: None
AAPG: The Hedberg conference in Vancouver is by invitation only. A few of us have been invited to join. Davis Lumley should attend. For the other members, it was not confirmed.
AGU: The annual meeting is planned for Dec 14-18. Several CO2 sessions (at least 2) have been discussed and proposed. It was recommended to have more synergies between the industry and the academia.
EAGE: A few of us attended the EAGE annual convention in Amsterdam early June. We were invited by the EAGE research committee to present our activities. MV gave a 3 slides presentation to the committee members and a quick review of our projects. The EAGE has no formal CO2 group in their RC but they are interested in working with us. Stefano Carminati has been appointed to be our contact within the EAGE for the Co2 Storage activity. Don White and Michel Verliac attended the CO2 Workshop before the EAGE Convention and Don presented Weyburn activity. MV has a backup of the Workshop slides.
GHGT: Nothing new to report
IAE: Kevin Dodds and Don White attended the IAE Network meeting. Presentations are available online at: http://www.co2captureandstorage.info/networks/monitoring5.html. A field trip to Nagaoka was part of the meeting.
IODP: Peter Kelemen will attend the IODP meeting in September to work on the next decade plan. Three drilling platforms will be considered: the Chilyou ship, the JOD resolution and other platforms (Rigs). More can be found at the following link: http://www.marum.de/en/iodp-invest.html.
SPE: The September SPE Forum in Spain (Cadiz) was almost fully booked a few days before the end of the registration.
Project # 5: SEAM Project
Project Leader: Partha Routh
Working Group: David Cooper, Cengiz Esmersoy, Michel Verliac
Partha could not attend the meeting but Stewart mentioned that Phase 1 will finish soon and that the SEG Convention time should be taken as a target for submitting a proposal. Lianje Huang and Erika Gaspreikova volunteered to join the project.
Project # 6: CO2 Special Issue on TLE in Feb 2010
Project Leader: Kevin Dodds
Working Group: None
Some concerns were reported and discussed within the Sub Committee on paper selection for publications in The Leading Edge. Due to the early selection process for the Special Issue on The Leading Edge expected for the end of the year, some papers could not be considered. Kevin Dodds mentioned a paper he had in mind from the IEA Networking conference. It was found also that the July Issue was announced with three papers on CO2 monitoring. The Subcommittee was not informed and this was a surprise for a few of us. Publications on CO2 issues are of the most interest for our Sub Committee and we believe that we could have helped to select or propose candidates for publications. We should have been informed in advance too.
We would like to propose that in the future, SEG publications should publish the Call for Papers and then put the Sub Committee to contribution to support and motivate industry and academic players to contribute. The Publication (TLE or Geophysics) Editor Committee should of course be the main owner but the Sub Committee felt that we missed an opportunity to contribute.
Another issue that was raised concerned the short deadline for papers (Oct 16 for the final version) that will prevent us to submit a case coming from the Summer Workshop. Peter Kelemen contacted The Leading Edge for a possible submission.
We hope to be able to write a summary of the Summer Workshop to be included in TLE. Kevin agreed to help Ron, in coordination with David in this process.
Project # 7: CO2 Special Issue on Geophysics
Project Leader: Chris Liner
Working Group: None
Nothing new to report.
Project # 8: Standards and Best Practices elaboration
Project Leader: None
Working Group: None
Nothing new to report.
Project # 9: Contribution to Practicing Geophysics - Closed
Project #10: Discussion groups
- (A) Site Screening and Characterization
- (B) Site Modeling
- (C) Site Monitoring
Project Leader: Michel Verliac (By default – waiting for a Project Leader)
Working Group: None
It was agreed in the previous meeting to use a reference document as support to open a discussion. The DOE monitoring recommendations were selected as a first candidate. Tom could not put it on the site for the time of the meeting but we started to discuss between the group before the formal meeting. The fact that the DOE expects the industry to be able to quantify 99% of the CO2 in place by 2014 is a big concern. This is obviously unrealistic. The group estimates that the error bar today could be up to 50%. The DOE did not listen to the experts. Kevin Dodds mentioned that this was discussed during the IEA Monitoring Network meeting too. In the European directive, the recommendations are to prove that there is no leakage. One mentioned that Sally Benson recommended to prove that 1% leakage is happening instead of proving that 99% are in place.
Project #11: SEG CO2 Geophysics Book
Project Leader: Chris Liner
Working Group: None
Topic # 3: Any items proposed by the subcommittee members
Item 3-1: Sub Committee organization and processes
MV asked the group to feedback on our organization and procedures. The group has been formed in late 2007 in San Antonio and it was felt that it could be the time for the group to express their feelings on how to improve our work. The group has expended a lot (26 members) with 11 projects initiated. The time zone of the committee extends from Saudi to Australia including Europe, Canada and US making physical phone conferences difficult. It could be perceived also that the group may face difficulties to stay focused.
MV would like to propose to strengthen the role of Project Leaders being fully in charge of their project with their respective team. The PL should be then in charge of reporting regularly to the group of the progresses, either through formal regular meeting, either through short memos or emails. From bi Monthly, the SC meetings could be then quarterly. The Project Groups should work then by their own and report independently.
Don agreed that the group was large now, what could be an issue. Kevin mentioned that the group is interested by the minutes to be informed about the progresses but a majority was not active. Small groups should be good to focus on a specific topic. Peter mentioned that he was happy to join the committee. Ron expressed that core groups on focused projects are ok. All of us are very busy but core activity close to regular business activity does not request too much extra work. Our geographical distribution may become an issue for meetings, especially for people far from the US. Kevin mentioned the ASEG where a federal executive committee works with local chapters. We could approach a similar model. Kevin mentioned also that the Japan ASEG chapter is setting a group for Insar. Ron is also interested by Insar. Maybe we could launch a project on technology mapping from a SEG point of view. Kevin said that we could start SIG (Special Interest Groups) for specific technology. Kevin agreed to lead an exploration group on Insar. Kevin proposed also a group for Deep Water Storage.
David Lumley could not attend but mentioned in a separate talk that maybe also we should revisit what are the objectives and the Strategy of the Sub Committee. We could have sub-groups with specific topics and the big committee could “meet” only three or four times a year. We could take some objectives to achieve during the year and focus on them.
MV would like then to propose the PL and their group to meet at their convenience, take the minutes and pass them to the SC chairman who will be in charge to consolidate and distribute the information the SC members. General meetings could then happen only 3 or 4 times a year. The WIKI site should be also used as tool of preference for discussion and reporting.
We would also recommend communications within the SC by emails without waiting for the formal SC meeting. Ownership should stay with the PL but new initiative could be launched by the members. SC Chairman will then assist as a facilitator mainly.
On another point, we agreed that our main ongoing projects for 2009 are:
- The Summer Research Workshop
- The special issue on The Leading Edge
- The proposal for SEAM Phase 2
For 2010, we could take a more active participation on the Wiki/Website of the committee to promote internal communication and exchange.
Item 3-2: 2010 Denver Technical Program
Stewart Lewin will chair (congratulations !) the 2010 Technical Program. Attached is the message that he wanted to pass to the Group. Please volunteer !
“As I mentioned in the conference call, I am looking for volunteers for the 2010 Denver SEG Technical Program committee (TPC) to serve as Leads to line up abstract reviewers in their area(s) of technical expertise. As you will note, the attached draft call for abstracts focuses on themes rather than specific technologies or disciplines and includes themes around CO2. If any of you are interested in volunteering for the TPC, please let me know. Like all previous Technical Program Chairs, I want us to produce the highest possible quality and impact program!”
The Society of Exploration Geophysicists invites you to share your case histories, state of the art technologies, and latest research results with your colleagues at the 2010 SEG International Exposition and 80th Annual Meeting in Denver, Colorado, USA.
Technical Program Chairperson Stewart A. Levin and his committee officially invite you to submit expanded abstracts for poster and oral presentations at the meeting. High quality contributions from all geophysical and related disciplines are welcomed, with preferential emphasis on themed poster sessions. Authors are encouraged to highlight how their work fits into any the following themes:
- Improved modeling and visualization to reduce risk and uncertainty in increasingly complex accumulations
- Improved net recovery from old and new fields
- Providing reliable access to deep water and deeply buried reservoirs
- Making the unconventional conventional in areas such as heavy oil, tight gas, CO2 sequestration
- Creating greater E&P efficiency with digital software and systems
- Microseismic - borehole and beyond
- EM methods for HCI calibration and risk reduction, reservoir and fluid characterization
- Seismic methodologies for rock property estimation before drilling and completions techniques
- Geophysics for environmental and geohazard identification and mapping
- Finding water for the burgeoning population of the planet. Is it more valuable than oil?
- Climate change, what's real and what's not - CO2 sequestration, geophysics monitoring of oceans density and temperature, and 3D modeling of oceans and atmosphere
Submissions must conform to standard SEG formats, be written in acceptable English, and have good quality graphics and references to support the text. These requirements will be strictly enforced and papers received after the deadline, containing deliberate commercialism, unclear text or figures, or formatting problems may be peremptorily rejected.
Abstract kits will be available online in December 2009. Hard copies can be requested from the SEG Business Office.
